Tashkent Hosts Türkiye’s “Democracy and National Unity Day” Commemoration

A commemorative event marking Türkiye’s “Democracy and National Unity Day” was held in Tashkent.

The event brought together officials from the Embassy of Türkiye, members of the public, and representatives of the media. Participants observed a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives while resisting the attempted coup in Türkiye on July 15, 2016. A recitation from the Holy Quran was also performed by a representative of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan.

During the ceremony, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Ufuk Ulutaş, delivered a speech, and a documentary film about the events of July 15 was presented.

July 15 is observed in Türkiye as Democracy and National Unity Day. The date was officially designated as a national day of remembrance to commemorate the attempted coup of July 15, 2016, and to honor those who lost their lives defending the country's democratic order.

On the evening of July 15, 2016, a group of members of the Turkish Armed Forces attempted to overthrow the government. Military vehicles were deployed in major cities, including Ankara and Istanbul, bridges were closed, and attacks were carried out against the Parliament building and other strategic facilities. However, the coup attempt was ultimately thwarted due to the resistance of the government, security forces, and thousands of citizens.

According to official figures, more than 250 people were killed, while over 2,000 others were injured during the events. Following the failed coup attempt, the Turkish government declared July 15 an official public holiday and national day of remembrance, symbolizing democracy and national unity.

Every year, commemorative ceremonies, wreath-laying events, Quran recitations, and official speeches are held across Türkiye. State leaders, public figures, and citizens pay tribute to those who lost their lives in 2016 and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of democracy and national unity.

Commemorative events are also organized by Turkish embassies and diplomatic missions around the world. These events serve to honor the victims of the July 15 events, preserve the memory of a significant chapter in Türkiye’s history, and highlight the importance of democracy.
