In Tajikistan, they do not believe the assurances of the new Afghan authorities regarding the fight against drugs and their reduction.

The Tajik Drug Control Agency noted that although the Taliban * after coming to power announced that they were strengthening control and punishment in this area, the reality says otherwise.

During a press conference, the head of the Agency, Khabibullah Vahidzod, cited UN statistics as an example, according to which the area of poppy cultivation in Afghanistan in 2022 reached 233,000 hectares, an increase of 32%. At the same time, the harvest also increased.

Tajik authorities found and seized most of the drugs in the border areas.

So, Vahidzoda cited statistics for 2020, before the Taliban came to power*, when 2.4 tons of substances were confiscated.

According to him, in 2021 this figure reached 4 tons, in 2022 - almost 5 tons.

“In the first half of 2023, more were confiscated than in the same period of the past. We do not believe in their promises,” the head of the department added.

According to the statistics of the institution, over 6 months of this year, the country's authorities detected and seized more than 2.4 kilograms of narcotic drugs.

Earlier, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, during a speech at a meeting of SCO heads of state, said that the scale of drug trafficking from Afghanistan had reached an alarming level.
