Suspension Bridge Collapses During Opening Ceremony in Indonesia
In Indonesia’s West Java province, the 60-meter-long Pongpet suspension bridge partially collapsed during its opening ceremony.
More than 50 people — including local officials and residents — stepped onto the bridge at the same time. At that moment, a suspension cable on the left side of the bridge came loose from its main anchor point.
As a result, the bridge tilted and sagged, causing part of it to collapse. Some people fell into the riverbed and onto rocks. No fatalities were reported.
It was later revealed that the bridge was designed to accommodate no more than three pedestrians or one motorcycle at a time. However, this restriction was not observed during the opening ceremony.
