Snow fell in southern Africa with the arrival of cold air masses from Antarctica to the western part of the Republic of South Africa. It is reported that various areas of the Western Cape province have been snowing for 10 hours. Unlike its predecessors, 2023 saw snowfall not only in mountainous areas, but also in many cities and districts of the province.Johannesburg and Pretoria had temperatures below zero degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Service warned that snowfall would be expected in the KwaZulu-Natal province in the southeast of the country in the coming hours. Ice covered the roads, with officials calling on drivers to be extremely cautious.
The Republic of South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere, where winter peaks in mid-July. The current cold came to Southern Africa from Antarctica.
