Shooting reported near the White House
An armed man opened fire near the White House, the residence of the U.S. president.
According to reports, officers of the United States Secret Service who were on duty at the scene returned fire and wounded the attacker. The suspect later died in hospital. One passerby was also injured in the shooting, while no Secret Service officers were harmed.
The attacker was identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best, who reportedly had mental health problems. He had previously attempted to enter the White House area.
At the time of the incident, Donald Trump was inside the White House, but he was not injured.
The sound of gunfire was also captured during live broadcasts by journalists working near the White House.
