The gruesome death of 37-year-old Uzbek Durdona Khakimova in Istanbul has shocked everyone. Her body was found dismembered in a trash can in the Şişli district. According to the investigation, the main suspect killed her with a knife and tried to hide the body. Two other people are under investigation in the case. The suspect tried to justify his crime with a “love affair and betrayal.” However, the deceased’s partner of 7 years, Murat Baskan, denied these claims. He said that the suspects were not Durdona’s lovers, but fellow countrymen whom she had helped on humanitarian grounds. The incident sparked protests in Istanbul and Ankara. Women demanded the safety of migrant women and strict punishment for the perpetrators. The Uzbek diplomatic mission in Turkey said it was taking control of the case. Under Turkish law, intentional homicide carries a life sentence.
