Sentences for prisoners who read books in Uzbekistan will be reduced

A procedure for reducing the sentence of prisoners by reading books has been approved in Uzbekistan. According to a new government resolution, the term of imprisonment of prisoners who successfully pass tests by reading recommended literature will be reduced. This procedure does not apply to persons sentenced to life imprisonment.

In accordance with the resolution, tests will be organized through the “E-Prisoner” information system. For each book read and successfully submitted, the sentence of the prisoner will be reduced by three days. However, the exemption granted for one year is set at no more than 30 days.

Prisoners can take tests twice a year. Each book will be presented with 25 test questions, and two minutes will be allotted for answering each question. Correct answers are evaluated out of 4 points. The maximum score is 100 points, and a prisoner who scores at least 70 points is considered to have successfully passed the test.

The test questions are developed by the Republican Center for Spirituality and Enlightenment in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovations and the Alisher Navoi National Library of Uzbekistan. The organization of the exams is the responsibility of the Department of Punishment Execution under the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

It is emphasized that this system serves to form spiritual and moral values ​​​​in convicts, to increase their reading culture. Also, a convict or his defense attorney who is dissatisfied with the test results can file a complaint with the court within five working days.
