Scientists revive "dire wolves" that went extinct 13,000 years ago
The U.S.-based company Colossal Biosciences has successfully revived the extinct species of "dire wolves" using ancient DNA. Based on DNA extracted from a 72,000-year-old skull and 13,000-year-old tooth, scientists made 20 genetic modifications to the wolf genome and implanted the embryos into surrogate mother dogs. As a result, two male and one female dire wolves were born. They are 20–25% larger than modern wolves, with powerful jaws and distinctive white fur.
According to scientists, reviving the dire wolf species will help study the ecosystems they once inhabited and understand the reasons for their extinction.
