Scientists have identified a new species of cat in Bolivia.

A new species of wild cat, previously unknown to science, has been identified in the mountain forests of Bolivia. Scientists confirmed it as a distinct species through genetic research. This marks the first new felid species to be officially identified in over a century.
Locals call it the "Tilkayo," and it has been given the scientific name *Leopardus tilcayo*. The animal inhabits the humid, cloud-covered Yungas mountain forests of Bolivia.
The Tilkayo measures approximately 46 centimeters in length and weighs 1.4 kilograms. It has light brown fur with spots on its body resembling those of a leopard. By analyzing the DNA of 38 cats from various regions of South America, scientists determined that what were previously grouped together actually comprise five distinct species.
According to the study, the Tilkayo diverged from other tiger cats approximately 1.4 million years ago. Little is currently known about its lifestyle, though observations indicate that the animal is primarily active at night.
