A roof collapse at a private school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar has resulted in the deaths of 34 students and one teacher. More than 40 others sustained injuries.

The incident occurred on the morning of October 15, while students were in class. The roof of the upper level collapsed onto the classrooms, damaging two floors of the building. Rescue workers and military personnel pulled those trapped beneath the rubble and transported the injured to hospitals.

Police indicated that structural defects may have been the cause of the disaster. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway, and the school principal has been taken into custody.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. They have also issued directives to ensure medical care for the injured and to conduct safety inspections of buildings housing educational institutions.
