President of Kyrgyzstan Sadr Japarov received Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Jagan Chapagein, who visited Kyrgyzstan today.

Priority issues of bilateral cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and UKKDF were discussed in order to organize project activities in the country to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters, humanitarian assistance and social support.

The head of state congratulated Jagan Chapagin on his appointment to the post of General Secretary for a second term and wished him success in his work.

Sadr Japarov noted that at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in 2022, at the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic, the resolution “Sustainable Mountain Development” was adopted, which is aimed at protecting mountain ecosystems. In the light of the growing negative impact of global climate change on Kyrgyzstan, he emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the UKDF in the field of reducing the damage caused by natural disasters and taking preventive measures to reduce the scale of emergencies.

Taking the opportunity, the President expressed gratitude to the federation, especially for the assistance provided in the fight against COVID and for helping the residents of the Batken region who suffered during the conflict with Tajikistan.

Jagan Chapagein once again noted that the climate agenda is related to the activities of the UKKDF in Kyrgyzstan, since the consequences of climate change in highland countries are felt earlier and more acutely than in many other countries of the world.

He also informed the head of state about the strategic decision to move the Central Asian regional office of the organization to Bishkek.
As a result, the parties expressed their readiness for further close cooperation between the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Kyrgyzstan.
