Russian universities offer free education in exchange for military service

Some Russian universities are increasingly encouraging applicants and students to join the military through contract service.

According to reports, applicants to the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) are being offered the opportunity to sign a one-year contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence and serve in drone units. In return, they are promised free tuition starting from the 2027 academic year, along with other benefits.

The offer also includes free accommodation in university dormitories, social benefits, and additional financial and technical support. Reports note that the practice of recruiting university students into military contract service has become increasingly widespread in Russia in recent years.
