Russia’s Need for Migrants Is Growing

Russia is facing a growing labor shortage in catering, logistics, agriculture, and housing services. As local residents are not interested in hard, low-paid work, the government is gradually lifting restrictions on migrants.
For example, in Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg, bans on hiring migrants have been lifted. Agriculture is suffering huge losses as crops are failing to be harvested. The lack of workers is causing fruits and vegetables to rot in the fields.
Farmers are demanding the abolition of the requirement to take a Russian language exam, as short-term migrants are unable to meet this requirement. Proposals are also being put forward to pay workers in products. So far, attempts to attract students have not yielded results.
