The US dependence on Russian nuclear fuel poses a threat to the national security of the country, as well as to the achievement of the set goals in the field of climate. He called on Congress to allocate funds to restore the domestic supply chain and restrict imports.
According to Huff, the fact that almost 20 percent of the fuel used in US nuclear reactors is supplied under contracts related to Russia is in itself a “serious disturbing fact.” According to the official, Russia controls almost 50% of the world's nuclear enrichment potential and for many years has “successfully worked to disrupt the US nuclear supply chain” by supplying cheap enriched uranium to world markets.
"It is very important that we get rid of dependence on Russia. If no measures are taken, Russia will continue to hold this market... this is important for our national security, climate, energy independence,” Catherine Huff notes.
He noted that the US administration has requested an additional $2.16 billion to support its strategy of stimulating local companies that have increased their uranium enrichment capacity.
Huff added that the U.S. must sign five to ten contracts to build new reactors over the next two to three years if it wants to achieve its climate goals by 2050.
