Russia highly appreciates the neutral status of Turkmenistan and the country's policy based on it, said Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the OSCE Alexander Volgarev, speaking on Tuesday at the international forum "The role of neutral states in strengthening security, stability and dialogue within the OSCE."
The Ashgabat forum was attended by members of the parliaments of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries, as well as representatives of international organizations. The event was organized jointly with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, TASS reports.
“The readiness to defend the foreign policy course through the prism of the interests of one’s state without prejudice to relations with other states requires courage and strategic multidimensionality today. A vivid example of success is the policy of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat stood, without exaggeration, at the origins of the definition of modern neutrality at the turn of the century. such an approach respects the political traditions and cultural and civilizational diversity of its partners as important elements in the formation of a more just multipolar world," said Alexander Volgarev.
He called the concept of neutrality "in Turkmen style" more adapted to the realities of the 21st century, noting that the Western model of neutrality - Finnish, Swedish, Austrian, Swiss, did not stand the test of modern geopolitical realities and, in fact, failed, the deputy representative of the Russian Federation explained.
According to Volgarev, the model of Turkmenistan's neutrality is now being tested for strength. “Turkmenistan stood at the origins of the definition of modern neutrality at the turn of the century. The Turkmen model is based primarily on observing the interests of the Turkmen people: not to be friends against someone, not to create alliances against someone, but to be friends with everyone in the interests of, first of all, their own people, their country, the interests of its economic development, the interests of developing human potential so that everyone would be pleased to deal with this country,” he concluded.
On December 12, 1995, at the session of the UN General Assembly, with the unanimous support of 185 states of the world, a special resolution on the permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan was adopted. The re-adoption of this resolution took place on June 3, 2015 at the 69th session of the General Assembly with the unanimous support of 193 states.
