The UN World Food Program and the Government of Tajikistan opened two WFP-funded bridges across the Yagnob River
The UN World Food Program and the Government of Tajikistan opened two WFP-funded bridges across the Yagnob River.
This was reported by the UN GDPR press service.
The ceremony was attended by the head of the Sughd region, Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, as well as representatives of the Ayni region and residents of the valley.
It is noted that the bridges will strengthen economic potential and improve living conditions and food security of rural communities.
The bridges, each 10 and 25 meters long, are strategically located just 105 km north of Dushanbe and will serve as a “lifeline” connecting 10 villages in the Yagnob Valley.
In the past, the lack of usable road bridges often disrupted its residents' access to the valley's center and inland villages, causing hardship and isolation.
“We believe in creating an enabling environment that stimulates local economic development and improves food and nutrition security,” said Charles Inwani, WFP Deputy Country Director for Tajikistan.
Yaghnobi bridges connect rural communities, which have great potential, with larger markets for agricultural products.
The Foreign Minister named Tajikistan’s initiatives in the field of sustainable development
The construction of the bridges was completed in partnership with Welthungerhilfe and the local authorities of the Ayni district of the Sughd region.
Led by WFP engineering teams and in collaboration with local partners, the project created employment opportunities for residents as equipment operators and drivers.
Improving local infrastructure to improve living standards is part of WFP's goal to achieve sustainable development, gender equality and food security in the remote mountain valley of Yagnob.
