Robert Pattinson was the only actor who asked to read The Odyssey script before accepting the role
Robert Pattinson was the only actor who asked director Christopher Nolan to show him the script for The Odyssey before agreeing to join the project. The actor revealed this in an interview with GQ.
According to Pattinson, Nolan called him and offered him a role in the film. “I said, ‘Yes, absolutely. I can’t wait to read the script.’ And he replied, ‘You want to read it? Everyone else just agreed,’” Pattinson recalled.
In the film, Pattinson will portray Antinous, one of the main antagonists in Homer’s epic poem. While Odysseus is away on his long journey, Antinous seeks to marry his wife Penelope and plots to kill the king’s son, Telemachus.
The Odyssey will be Christopher Nolan’s 13th feature film. The director personally wrote the screenplay based on the ancient Greek epic and produced the project alongside his wife and longtime collaborator, Emma Thomas. The film is expected to become the first feature-length movie shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
In addition to Pattinson, the cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, and Jon Bernthal.
Filming took place from February to August. The production team worked in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Malta, Scotland, and Spain before completing production in Los Angeles.
A significant portion of the movie was filmed at sea. Nolan explained:
“We took the actors playing Odysseus’ crew onto real waves and into real locations. The sea is limitless, terrifying, beautiful, and generous as conditions change. We wanted to convey how difficult those journeys would have been and the leap of faith people took when venturing into an unexplored, unmapped world.”
Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, grossed $958.8 million worldwide, received 13 Academy Award nominations, and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
