Deputies adopted a draft law in Uzbekistan that provides for administrative responsibility for promoting cohabitation with two or more wives and openly denying the equal rights of men and women.

At the next session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the bill "On amendments and additions to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Code of Administrative Responsibility of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was considered.

Administrative charges for promoting the superiority or inferiority of one category of citizens over other categories of citizens based on the proposed law, based on their national, racial, ethnic or religious affiliation, and for performing a religious ceremony of marriage between persons whose marriages are not registered in accordance with the law and criminal liability is envisaged.

At the same time, the draft stipulates administrative responsibility for promoting cohabitation with two or more wives and openly denying the equal rights of women and men.

It was noted at the meeting that, despite the implemented measures, recently the number of marriages concluded only according to religious rituals and polygamy has been increasing in Uzbekistan.

Also, promotion of polygamy and its "advantages" through advertising, entertainment and analytical materials is on the rise. As a result, the number of children born out of wedlock has also increased. In particular, in 2022, babies born in 18,955 cases across the country were registered based on the application of a single mother. In 2021, this figure was 19,037, and in 2020, it was 16,564.

The fact that the marriage is not registered in the civil registry office in the prescribed manner causes various problems related to the determination of paternity, alimony, inheritance, and as a result, citizens, especially women, lose confidence in the legal policy of the state.

It was noted in the meeting that the adoption of this draft law will serve to reliably protect the rights of women and children. After heated questions and long debates, the draft law was adopted by the deputies.
