Quarantine measures have been imposed in certain hospitals in Russia's Irkutsk region following the death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker. Additionally, a mask-wearing mandate has been introduced at an aluminum plant in Shelekhov.
The deceased worked at the Anti-Plague Institute in Irkutsk. Russian authorities have not yet officially declared the cause of death to be plague; Rospotrebnadzor stated that the employee suffered from pneumonia of unknown origin.
However, some Russian media outlets and the head of Buryatia have reported that she died of plague. Due to the lack of official confirmation, these reports are currently being treated with caution.
A total of 197 people who had contact with the deceased have been placed under medical observation, with 189 of them hospitalized. Rospotrebnadzor reported that no symptoms of the disease have been detected in any of them.
