Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara'a visited Moscow on January 28 and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was al-Shara'a's second trip to Russia in the past three months. The talks focused on bilateral relations, in particular economic cooperation, the participation of Russian companies in the reconstruction of Syria, and the issue of Russia's military bases in Syria. Putin noted that positive dynamics are observed in Russian-Syrian relations. Al-Shara'a, in turn, highly appreciated Russia's role in ensuring stability in the region.
The meeting also raised the activities of former high-ranking Assad-era military personnel who fled to Russia and the security situation in Syria.
