Protests in Iran: at least 45 killed, internet largely shut down

Mass protests have been ongoing in Iran since December 28, with at least 45 people killed, including eight minors. Security forces in Tehran and other major cities are using tear gas against demonstrators. According to the UK-based NetBlocks organization, internet connectivity across the country has been cut by around 90 percent, with access largely limited to government officials and security agencies.

The unrest was triggered by the sharp depreciation of the national currency, the rial, and growing economic hardship. Although the government introduced monthly allowances to ease public anger, the measures have failed to stop the protests. U.S. President Donald Trump said he is closely monitoring the situation and urged Iranian authorities to stop killing civilians.
