Protests against deportations of migrants flare up in Los Angeles

On June 6, protests erupted in downtown Los Angeles after ICE immigration officers used tear gas and stun grenades during large-scale raids in Los Angeles, arresting 44 people. Protesters blocked roads and threw rocks and firecrackers at immigration officers. The White House described the events as a “riot” and Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the city. The Pentagon said the Marines could be called in if necessary.
California Governor Gavin Newsom called the federal forces’ actions “provocative” and demanded their withdrawal. The protests also spread to New York, where clashes with police are also taking place.
