Proposal in Turkmenistan to Stop Annual Increases of Salaries and Pensions

In Turkmenistan, Yazmirat Atamiradov, a member of the People’s Council of Elders, proposed ending the practice of annually increasing salaries, pensions, benefits, and stipends. He voiced this idea during a meeting chaired by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, addressing his remarks to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Atamiradov argued that living standards in the country had already reached a high level, claiming that the privileges provided to citizens were unmatched anywhere else in the world.

The proposal sparked heated discussions on social media. Users criticized the idea, pointing to high inflation, noting that meat prices had doubled within six months to 100 manats, while the minimum pension remains at 550 manats ($27.5) and benefits at 520 manats ($26).
