Patient's Severed Legs Reattached for the First Time in the World
In China, the legs of a 51-year-old man—which had been completely severed at the thigh following a factory accident—were successfully reattached.
Doctors reattached the legs during an operation that lasted nearly eight hours. According to a hospital in the city of Suzhou, this marks the world's first successful procedure to simultaneously reattach two legs completely severed at the thigh.
After 20 months of treatment, the patient began walking independently with the aid of a special device. Sensation in his legs has also partially returned. Doctors are optimistic that he will be able to walk without assistive devices within one or two years.
