Pakistan school roof collapses

Fourteen children and a teacher were killed when a roof collapsed at a private school in Lahore, Pakistan. Rescuers pulled out the bodies of the children, aged between 5 and 16, and a 30-year-old female teacher from the rubble. Most of the victims were under the age of 9. According to Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari, initial investigations showed that the school was not officially registered and was operating in an old private residential building. She said that if negligence or illegality is found in the incident, strict action will be taken against the culprits. After the incident, the Punjab government has issued instructions to inspect dangerous buildings and tighten control over unregistered schools and private educational institutions before the monsoon season. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for increased security in educational institutions.
