Over a thousand people died due to the heatwave in Spain

At least 1,028 people died in Spain as a result of the intense heatwave in June. This figure is more than double that of the same period last year and represents the highest death toll recorded in June since 2015.
According to the country's national weather agency, the first six months of the year marked the hottest period in Spain's history. Average temperatures were 1.6 degrees above normal, with the figure reaching 3.2 degrees above normal in June.
The heatwave also swept across the rest of Europe. According to the WHO, more than 1,300 additional people died across the continent as a result of the heatwave.
Experts attribute the record-breaking heat to a mass of hot air arriving from the Sahara Desert and to climate change.
