One in Five Teenagers Experiences Sexual Violence Online
According to a UNICEF study, in 2025, one in five teenagers aged 12–17 experienced sexual abuse online.
The study involved 21,000 teenagers from 21 countries. More than 15 million of them were exposed to unwanted sexual content, while nearly 9 million were forced to engage in such conversations. Photos of 4 million children were shared without their consent.
Some 41% of victims did not tell anyone about what happened. Meanwhile, 57% of perpetrators were known to the victims — they were friends, family members, or romantic partners.
Such cases were also reported on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and online gaming platforms.
UNICEF called on governments and technology companies to do more to protect children from online threats.
