Oil spills into river in Surkhandarya after heavy rainfall

In the Surkhandarya region, oil-contaminated water flowed into a river following heavy rainfall. This was reported by the press secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan, Shukhrat Suyunov.

According to the report, temporary oil storage ponds were located along the Khangaronsay stream in Kofrun mahalla of Boysun district. These were built earlier this year by Eriell Group using earthen dams to prevent oil from entering the water during drilling operations.

On April 23, due to heavy rainfall, the water level in the stream rose and overflowed the dams. As a result, oil-contaminated water flowed into Bandikhansay and then into the Surkhandarya River.

The dams were restored the same day, and the leakage was fully contained.

Authorities reported increased monitoring in areas at risk of floods and mudflows.
