Norway offers reward for salmon escape

International seafood producer Mowi has offered a reward of 500 kronor (about $44) for each salmon caught. The fish are believed to have escaped after the outer ring of their cage was damaged during a storm. The average weight of each missing fish is 5.5 kg. The Norwegian government has called for an intensified search.

The escape is a disaster for salmon, as the escaped fish can seriously harm wild fish. Crossbreeding between wild fish and farmed salmon results in offspring with poor long-term survival rates. Norway's salmon population is also at a historic low.
