The Donga Ilbo newspaper writes that North Korea has stopped the operation of the nuclear reactor at its main nuclear complex.

According to US and South Korean intelligence, operations at the 5-megawatt nuclear reactor at the Yongben nuclear complex have been suspended since late September.

"South Korea and the United States believe that this may be a sign of ongoing efforts to obtain weapons-grade plutonium," Donga Ilbo newspaper quoted a government source as saying.

The reprocessing of spent fuel in a nuclear reactor is a step that is carried out before the extraction of plutonium; designed to create weapons-grade plutonium nuclear weapons. The Yongben nuclear complex is the North's main source of plutonium, which has been used to create nuclear weapons.

According to the publication, North Korea also has uranium enrichment plants, which are a separate source of material that can be used for nuclear weapons.
