The head of the Ministry of Justice of New Zealand Kiri Allan resigned after she was caught drunk driving. Problems with the police due to alcohol were preceded by a road accident. This is reported by Bloomberg.
According to media reports, Allan got into an accident the day before around 9 o'clock local time in Wellington. She was taken into custody almost immediately, but released a few hours later. On July 24, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins was forced to explain himself to the media. It turned out that Allan was charged with a number of violations: in addition to alcohol in the blood, the Minister of Justice refused to communicate with the police.
"I spoke to her this morning and informed her that she cannot be a minister. Kiri agreed and resigned," Hipkins told reporters.
He also noted that Kiri has recently experienced psychological difficulties after breaking up with a long-time partner. "Kiri is an incredibly talented man who fought demons and lost this battle," said the Prime Minister of New Zealand. For Hipkins, the situation is complicated by the fact that elections are due to be held in the country in October, and Kiri is the fourth minister recently dismissed.
