Nearly 300,000 people drown every year worldwide
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 300,000 people die from drowning every year around the world. Drowning is among the top ten leading causes of death for children aged 5 to 14.
Experts say that climate change, floods, storms, and extreme heat waves are increasing the risk of drowning. Research also shows that as air temperatures rise, the number of drowning-related deaths tends to increase.
Marking World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25, the WHO urged governments and the public to promote swimming education, closely supervise children near water, improve water rescue skills, and strengthen safety measures around bodies of water.
