Nearly 13,000 people infected with coronavirus in Singapore in a week

Singapore reported 12,700 new COVID-19 cases between May 10 and 16, up from 8,000 the week before.
The country's Communicable Diseases Agency said hospital admissions also rose. The average daily hospitalisation rose from 56 to 73. The intensive care unit is seeing an average of one seriously ill patient a day.
Experts attribute the increase to a decline in immunity among the population and the spread of a new variant of the virus, NB.1.8.1. This variant accounts for more than half of all cases. Officials say existing vaccines are also effective against this variant.
Officials are urging people to continue getting vaccinated, practice good hygiene, stay home if they feel unwell and wear masks if necessary.
