The Astana court sentenced Kazakh oligarch Kairat Boranbayev to six years in prison with his property confiscated. Informburo informs about it.
The general director of "AziyaGazChundja" Roman Nakhanov was also punished in the same way. Tair Januzak, the former deputy chairman of KazakhGaz, was sentenced to five years in prison. All three of them were banned from public service for life.
According to Informburo, the procedural agreement signed by Boranbayev with the Astana Prosecutor's Office stipulates 6 years of imprisonment.
"The parties confirm that there are conditions for concluding a procedural agreement in the form of a procedural agreement based on the requirements of Article 613 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The defendants have not been subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, they have voluntarily entered into a plea agreement and are aware of its legal consequences.
"The representatives of the victims agreed to conclude a procedural agreement in the form of a plea agreement and stated that they have no claims against Boranbayev, Nakhanov and Januzak," read out prosecutor Oljas Khairullaev.
Kairat Boranbayev was among the 50 richest and most influential businessmen of Kazakhstan. His daughter was married to Oysulton, grandson of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev - Oysulton died in August 2020. The press service of the Financial Monitoring Agency reported on March 17, 2022 that Boranbayev was arrested. The businessman was accused of embezzling a large amount of funds.
In March of this year, the court of the 2nd Saryarkin district of Astana deprived Boranbayev of his freedom for 8 years. Roman Nakhanov and Tair Januzak were also sentenced to eight years in prison. All of them were found guilty of embezzling 14.5 billion tenge during the resale of gas to the national company.
In the summer, the court of criminal cases overturned the verdict against Boranbayev and other defendants due to the fact that there was no original copy of the document showing the price of gas.
On the eve of the new verdict, the press service of the Financial Monitoring Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported that Boranbayev voluntarily returned more than 90 billion tenge ($195.4 million) to the state. He transferred another 30 billion tenge ($65 million) to the Education Infrastructure Support Fund. The agency reminds that the entrepreneur previously paid 14.5 billion tenge ($31.5 million) damages as part of the investigation into the embezzlement of natural gas imports.
