NATO member states elected Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the new Secretary General. He will replace Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg in October.
Mark Rutte is 57 years old. He has been leading the government of the Netherlands since October 2010. Jens Stoltenberg has been leading NATO since 2014. His mandate ended in October 2022, but it was not possible to leave his post after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. So far, he has been re-elected to this position 3 times.
Mark Rutteni will start his work on October 1, 2024.
