NATO wants to postpone the decision to open its representative office in Tokyo until the fall or later, Nikkei Asia reported, citing its sources.
According to the publication, the issue of opening the NATO representative office in the capital of Japan, which will be the first for the alliance in Asia, was planned to be agreed at the Vilnius summit. However, it was not possible to reach an agreement on this issue, among other things, the reason for this was the position of France, which "values its relations with China", the interviewees of the newspaper said.
At the same time, NATO and Japan continue the discussion and strive to reach a decision by the end of the year, writes Nikkei.
Earlier, NHK and Politico reported about Paris's objections to the opening of the NATO office in Tokyo. According to NHK, although Japan is not a part of the military bloc, potential membership in the alliance will be discussed at the NATO summit to be held in Vilnius on July 11-12. Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kisida will participate in it.
Let us remind you that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the multi-year aid package that will bring Ukraine closer to NATO will be approved at the conference in Vilnius.
At the summit, Polish President Andrzej Duda expressed hope that Ukraine will be accepted into NATO on the basis of a simplified procedure.
