President Shavkat Mirziyoyev addressed the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his speech, the head of state noted that in recent years he has achieved notable results on the protection of Human Rights in Uzbekistan.
"In our country, forced and child labor was completely eliminated. Over a century, millions of people in Uzbekistan have been forcibly attracted to cotton picking. Every year from September to December, the main part of the population – teachers and doctors, entrepreneurs, workers and servants, and, most sadly, schoolchildren and students were mobilized for cotton picking. As a result of this, boycotts were declared on Uzbek cotton, and the country was included in the “black lists”for years.
Thanks to our firm will, now all this has become a thing of the past. Our people were freed from the slavery of cotton, " the president said.
At the same time, Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted that the new Constitution of Uzbekistan guarantees a ban on forced labor and establishes criminal liability for it. “I believe that it is necessary to strengthen the fight against forced and child labor on a global scale. Our experience shows that it is possible to put an end to this,” said the head of state.
A few days ago, the Italian edition Corriere della Sera wrote about the beginning of cotton picking in Uzbekistan, acknowledging that forced labor in the fields had been eliminated. The publication wrote that today Farmers of Uzbekistan can grow their desired products, even export their products. ” Those who want to work on the ground, those who want to pick cotton, do this for a fee, " the article says.
