Muslim men in Russia are allowed to practice polygamy

The Council of Ulema of the Religious Administration of Muslims of Russia has allowed Muslims to have up to 4 sharia marriages. In this case, a married man must notify his wife of his intention to enter into a new marriage with another woman. Also, a man entering into such a marriage must take custody of all children and notarize the will.

According to statistics, in 2023, 1 million 264 thousand children were born in the country, which is the lowest figure since 1999. For this reason, the Russian State Duma proposed playing a lottery with apartments and cars to increase the birth rate, and a tax on childlessness may also be introduced in Russia.
