Mirziyoyev's role in resolving the border dispute between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan was said to be significant

In the second part of the documentary "President" aired on the local "Region TV", Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov spoke about how the border dispute with Tajikistan was resolved in 2021-2022 and the significant role played by Shavkat Mirziyoyev in it. He said that after the dispute that arose in April 2021, he held negotiations with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, but that the initial 10-hour talks were ineffective, and then Mirziyoyev convinced the leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to "reach an agreement without missing the opportunity."
Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev also recognized Mirziyoyev as one of the leaders bringing the Central Asian countries closer together.
“Let the Kyrgyz and Tajiks come, stop the border disputes. If the disputes continue, no investors and tourists will come to us. We all have the word “Istanbul”, they do not understand whether it is Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan. After saying “Istanbul”, no one will come to us, you should approach us like this”, – says the minister.

In April 2021 and September 2022, disputes over water use on the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan led to military clashes, as a result of which dozens of people died. In March 2025, Japarov and Rahmon reached and signed an agreement on the delimitation and demarcation of the border. Later, the “Friendship” stele was solemnly unveiled in Khujand with the participation of the leaders of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
