Minister sentenced to death gets another 21 years in prison

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted and sentenced to death, has been sentenced to another 21 years in prison after being found guilty of illegally acquiring state land near the capital Dhaka. Seven years in each case, for a total of 21 years.
Her son Sajib Wazed and daughter Saima Wazed were also sentenced to five years in prison each. The court said Hasina had manipulated state property for personal gain.
Hasina, 78, now lives in India and has defied extradition requests to return to Bangladesh. The trial and its fairness have been questioned by some legal experts.

Sheikh Hasina ordered a violent crackdown on mass student protests in 2024, killing nearly 1,400 people.
