Sivarasa Anojan, a 24-year-old Sri Lankan national working in Saudi Arabia, has been sentenced to death over a comment posted on Facebook.
The incident began after a video circulated on social media showing a Muslim man kicking a dog that was following pilgrims during a Hindu pilgrimage in Sri Lanka. This sparked religious debates online. During the discussion, one user posted a comment insulting a Hindu deity. In response, Anojan posted a comment insulting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Anojan subsequently deleted his comment and apologized. However, a screenshot of the comment had already been taken and reported to Saudi authorities, leading to his arrest in July.
Initially, the court sentenced him to five years in prison and a fine of 3 million Saudi riyals. Later, the prosecution appealed, seeking a review of the case under Sharia law, and the court increased the sentence to the death penalty.
Anojan's family is now pleading for clemency. They have been unable to contact him since September 28, and Saudi authorities have not announced a specific date for the execution.
The Sri Lankan government is also taking diplomatic and legal measures to save Anojan. Negotiations with Saudi officials are underway, work on an appeal is in progress, and plans are being made to request a royal pardon. Additionally, a four-member delegation of lawyers will travel to Saudi Arabia to meet with his local legal counsel.
