Mexican drug lord 'El Mencho' buried in golden coffin

Nemesio Osegura Cervantes, nicknamed “El Mencho,” the leader of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation cartel, was buried in a golden coffin in the Zapopan district of Guadalajara on March 2.

The 59-year-old former police officer died in Mexico from injuries sustained during a military operation on February 22. The funeral was attended by huge wreaths, a large military contingent and the Mexican national anthem. Some of the wreaths featured images of roosters — Osegura Cervantes was often called “The Lord of the Roosters” because of his interest in cockfighting.

Cervantes’ death has sparked unrest and revenge attacks in about 20 states in Mexico, resulting in more than 70 deaths. The government is currently pursuing other high-ranking members of the cartel.
