“Melissa”: The Strongest Hurricane of the Century Hits Jamaica

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a hurricane named Melissa with winds reaching 300 km/h has struck Jamaica, becoming one of the strongest storms in the island’s recorded history.

The storm has brought torrential rains, waves up to four meters high, and widespread flooding. Many roads, bridges, and power lines have been severely damaged. Around 1.5 million people are currently at risk, and emergency services are working around the clock to assist affected areas.

The Jamaican government has declared a state of emergency and prepared over 800 temporary shelters. However, local media report that many residents are refusing to evacuate, complicating rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged citizens to move to safe areas immediately and follow official instructions.

Experts warn that the increasing frequency and intensity of such hurricanes in the Caribbean region are a direct consequence of climate change. As sea temperatures rise, hurricanes are becoming stronger and more destructive, posing a growing threat to island nations.
