In the United States, 64-year-old Michael Sullivan has been awarded $13 million in damages after nearly 30 years in prison.
He was convicted of the 1986 murder and manslaughter of Wilfred McGrath and was acquitted in November of that year. A jury found that a police chemist had given false testimony during the trial. The prosecution's claim that there was blood on Sullivan's clothes was rejected after retesting.
The court ordered the former prisoner to pay $13 million in damages, but under state law, the maximum amount of compensation in such cases is $1 million. Sullivan said that during his time in prison he lost his mother and four siblings, was abandoned by his girlfriend, and was repeatedly attacked by other prisoners.
