Major wildfires in France and Spain force nearly 300,000 people to evacuate
Ongoing large-scale wildfires in France and Spain have forced nearly 300,000 people to evacuate.
In France, wildfires have been burning in the Gironde and Landes regions since July 22. About 200,000 people have been evacuated, and the fires have spread across more than 35,300 hectares. Authorities have deployed 1,000 military personnel and an A400M military transport aircraft to help contain the blazes.
In Spain, the fires have burned approximately 45,000 hectares of land and affected more than 88,000 people. Firefighters are working to prevent two major wildfires west of Madrid from merging into a single, larger fire.
