Major forest fires in Turkey: Residents evacuated in Izmir

 

A major forest fire has broken out in the Turkish province of Izmir between the districts of Menderes and Seferihisar. The fire is spreading rapidly due to strong winds (up to 117 km per hour). Most air support is out of action, with only two large aircraft involved.

According to Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban, the fire is not yet under control. More than a thousand rescue workers, 122 fire engines and 84 heavy equipment have been deployed.

Three villages have been evacuated, and residents of Seferihisar are being relocated. There have been no deaths, but there have been smoke inhalation. Izmir International Airport has been closed.
