Law on Amending the Uzbek Alphabet Approved by the Senate

On September 10, the Senate approved a law amending the Latin-based Uzbek alphabet.
Under the new law, the current 26 letters and 3 letter combinations will be replaced by 28 letters and a single apostrophe symbol. These changes aim to standardize the alphabet, eliminate certain writing inconveniences, and advance the digitalization of the Uzbek language.
The transition to the new alphabet will not hinder the continued circulation of documents, national currency, and securities issued under the current alphabet. Certain signboards, directional signs, and symbols may remain in use until a specified deadline or until they become unusable.
The law will enter into force six months after its adoption.
