Its construction is $16 million.
A new landfill in the city of Akhangaran, Tashkent region, will be completed by November this year. It is being built with the participation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The construction cost is $16 million, Fergana reports.
The landfill is designed to collect household waste from the population of Tashkent and the Tashkent region.
For the implementation of the project, 30 hectares of land were allocated, of which 25 hectares were allocated directly to the territory of the landfill.
“The entire territory of the landfill will be covered with a special material made of geotextile, geogrid and other geomaterial. The bottom of the landfill will be a continuous sealed pool, due to which there will be no negative impact on groundwater and the atmosphere," said Rafael Bekmullin, head of the Mahsustrans branch for waste handling and disposal.
He added that pipes would be laid along the bottom of the landfill to pump water out of the waste. “We will also install pipes for pumping gas and methane, which in the future will make it possible to produce methane and generate electricity,” Bekmullin said.
The landfill is designed for 15-20 years of operation, it can accommodate about 20 million tons of garbage.
The need to build a new landfill in the Tashkent region in June 2019 was announced by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. He explained that the existing landfill in the Akhangaran region was 98% full.
In February 2022, the President stated that none of the 197 waste landfills in Uzbekistan meets sanitary and environmental requirements, and 24 landfills are full.
Uzbekistan produces 7 million tons of solid waste annually, the volume is growing by 2% per year.
Mirziyoyev instructed the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection and khokims (heads of administrations) of the regions to restore order at the landfills and eliminate those that have exhausted their resources.
In March of the same year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided two loans in the amount of $120 million for the construction of landfills in the Khorezm region and Karakalpakstan.
