Kazakhstan may ban children from social media

The Kazakh government is considering restricting the ability of children under 16 to create accounts on social media. Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balayeva said that draft laws have been submitted for public discussion and mechanisms for verifying the age of users will be developed. At the same time, issues of improving media literacy and regulating advertising revenues are also being considered.

The practice of introducing age restrictions on social media is being used in a number of countries. In Australia, children under 16 will be banned from using social media from 2024. Denmark plans to introduce such a restriction for those under 15, and Malaysia intends to restrict users under 16 from 2026. France is also discussing a ban on those under 15.

Countries such as China and France are also strengthening measures to protect children from harmful online content.
