A referendum on a new draft constitution was held in Kazakhstan on March 15, and according to exit polls, nearly 90 percent of voters approved the draft. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated the people on the adoption of the new constitution, noting that the nationwide referendum was open and fair. A total of 9,126,850 people took part in the referendum.
According to the new constitution, the position of vice president will now be introduced, a unicameral parliament will be established, and a new advisory body called the People's Council of Kazakhstan will be established.
The document also strengthens new rules regulating the rights and freedoms of citizens, the status of languages, and issues of religion, and includes additional rules on the protection of personal data and privacy.
